Re: That’s dangerous
So far in this class, we’ve looked at some great examples of New Media – journalism that goes beyond the printed page. That media has come in the forms of blogs, traditional news media outlets, and independent publications. We’ve looked at ways that print journalism may eventually be replaced by these new media sources. At the very least, they’re going o become a larger part of media than they currently are.
That transition is going to be perfect, right?
Not so fast.
What do you think? Are bloggers going to ruin journalism? Many people disagree. However, this change can’t be all good.
1. New media can be dangerous due to open use. New media forms have no concrete purpose. They have no single purpose and it is up to users to decide. With no designated use, there are no laws yet developed. And government is too slow to catch up. Due to Moore’s Law there’s no possibility to limit this.
The way to counter this is to embed media and software. Encoding software to recognize copywrited material. However there is no way to save journalism from free floating data. There’s always the option of stealth adverstising.
No clicks necessary.
2. Readers will need to change the way they precieve journalism. The realization that to have quality, reliable stories, that they need to pay may be a bit hard on readers. They them selves will need to check and balance the information they receive. Readers also need to be aware that they may need to buy totally new hardware/software.
IE. eBook readers.
Or software such as the Adobe Air.
3. Ethics needs to be carried over. Having a world of only bias reporters isn’t a use to anyone. People disregarding or misrepresnting facts for world wide use spells down fall for journalist. Another thing is integrity. Standards need to be instated to avoid swaying reporters. Problem is, it needs to be read across the board. (See Ethics in Journalism byMichael Kunczik)
…there is also the criticism that the public has no ethics.
This responsibility may be something that bloggers are not ready for.
