What? This is considered news??

Each morning I am woken up by the radio, broadcasting the Dave Ryan in the Morning Show on 101.3 KDWB. The station provides news breaks between songs. One is even labelled “Stupid News”, where they go on about pointless subjects. While another is called “Dave’s Dirt”, and focuses more on celebrities.

This segment makes me question what exactly is considered news. Things like Ashton Kutcher waxing his chest or dog who ate magnets seem to be making headlines, while less people care about news that actually affects OUR lives.

Today the Internet has allowed anyone to post links, photos, stories or videos that really shouldn’t mean anything to us but are now becoming top news. Stories like a dog eating magnets or the second Mntauk monster found should not be considered as newsworthy.

The new thing is even having entire newspapers or magazines filled with fake news. Is this because there isn’t adequate REAL news to interest the public? Or is it the fact that half the fun of hearing the news is trying to figure out for yourself if it is really true or completely blown out of proportion?

Publications such as The Onion or The National Inquirer present news that is either completely made up or based on gossip. It’s sad to think that the things that sell are the publications that are solely based on the unimportant ‘news’ rather than the things that should matter.
